2026 Hyundai Elantra vs. Competitors Hero

While some automakers have given up on small sedans, the category lives on for a number of brands. Among them is Hyundai, whose Elantra has been making waves for 30-plus years and is still taking on established rivals. Today’s Elantra is part of the model’s seventh generation, which represents advancements in design, technology, and value. That said, it’s worth showing potential buyers what they’ll get with the Elantra versus its key competitors, such as the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Mazda Mazda3. On this page, we compare the 2026 edition of the least expensive trim for each of these small sedans.

Pricing

With a starting price of $22,625, the Elantra is the least expensive sedan in Hyundai’s lineup and one of the most affordable new cars on the market. It’s also the cheapest option in this comparison. The Corolla has a base MSRP of $22,925, while the entry-level Mazda3 jumps to $24,550. The Civic’s starting price of $24,695—more than $2,000 over the Elantra—is the highest of the group.

Warranty

Hyundai has long been known for its generous warranty coverage, which remains unmatched by Honda, Mazda, or Toyota. The Elantra’s bumper-to-bumper warranty lasts for five years or 60,000 miles, compared to three years or 36,000 miles for the others. The Elantra also has superior powertrain protection, which stretches for 10 years or 100,000 miles as opposed to five years or 60,000 miles for the Civic, Mazda3, and Corolla. Roadside assistance also favors the Elantra, as Hyundai provides 24/7 service for five years with no mileage limit. The Civic and Mazda3 are covered for three years or 36,000 miles. Toyota only provides roadside assistance for two years (with no mileage restrictions).

Ownership Costs

Edmunds looked at total ownership costs over a five-year period, assessing depreciation, fuel economy, insurance, maintenance, repairs, financing, taxes, and fees. Based on 13,500 miles of average annual driving, the Elantra and Civic have the same average ownership cost per mile of $0.42. The Corolla is slightly cheaper to own at $0.41 per mile, while the Mazda3 is the most expensive at $0.44 per mile. Edmunds' research revealed that the Elantra has lower maintenance and repairs costs over five years than the Civic, Mazda3, and Corolla.

Cabin Space

All four sedans offer compact efficiency, so maximizing cabin space ensures a more comfortable ride for the driver and passengers. In some areas, like front legroom and rear headroom, these cars have almost identical measurements. However, a few key dimensions give the Elantra an advantage. For instance, this Hyundai has 40.6 inches of front headroom, more than the Mazda3 (38.0 inches), Corolla (38.3 inches), and Civic (39.3 inches). The contrast is even greater with rear legroom. Here, the Elantra has 38.0 inches, versus the Mazda3 (34.4 inches), Corolla (34.8 inches), and Civic (37.4 inches).

Safety Technology

Driver-assist features such as forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking are standard across all four cars. However, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are unavailable with the base Civic, while these technologies are standard on all trims of the Elantra, Mazda3, and Corolla.

Rating

In a sedan comparison, J.D. Power gave the Elantra a score of 83 out of 100, which tied with the Civic. The Corolla and Mazda3 had another tie, but with a lower rating of 78. For its Best Compact Cars of 2026 category, Kelley Blue Book (KBB) gave the Civic a top rating of 4.7 out of 5, followed closely by the Elantra at 4.6. The Corolla earned 4.5, while the Mazda3 trailed with a score of 4.1.
