Trims, Powertrain, and Fuel Economy
Hyundai offers the front-wheel-drive Sonata sedan in six trims: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, N Line, N Line Night, and Limited. The SE and SEL have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 191 hp and 181 lb.-ft. of torque. The SEL Plus and Limited move up to a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine making 180 hp and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. If that’s not enough power for you, there are the two N Line trims with their turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder that puts out 290 hp and 311 lb.-ft. of torque and pairs with an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic. The other trims get a conventional eight-speed automatic gearbox. Based on the EPA’s official ratings, the SE returns an estimated 28 mpg around town and 38 mpg on the highway. The SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited achieve 27 city/37 highway, while the performance-oriented N Line trims are just a tad thirstier, returning 23 city/33 highway.
Equipment By Trim
The SE comes with LED headlights and daytime running lights, fabric upholstery, manual climate control, and a 60/40-split folding rear seatback. The SEL gains heated side mirrors with integrated LED turn-signal indicators, keyless entry and ignition, heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The optional Convenience Package will issue Digital Key, a panoramic sunroof, a 12.3-inch LCD gauge cluster, wireless phone charging, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, LED interior lighting, second-row air vents, and a rear USB charge port.
The SEL Plus comes with the equipment listed within the Convenience Package, in addition to synthetic leather seats with microfiber inserts and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Infotainment and Connectivity
The SE’s infotainment system starts with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming. SiriusXM satellite radio and BlueLink connected car services are added at the SEL level, while the SEL Plus and higher trims get the loaded version, which has a 10.25-inch touchscreen, navigation, dynamic voice recognition, and an upscale Bose audio system with a dozen speakers.
Active Safety Aids
Every ’22 Sonata trim comes with the SmartSense bundle of advanced active safety technologies. At the base level, it consists of forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, driver attention warning, adaptive cruise control, and rear occupant alert. The SEL and above are given blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, and safe exit warning. The Limited has it all: reverse automatic braking, a blind-spot view monitor (which presents a live feed of the vehicle’s blind spots in the gauge cluster), Remote Smart Parking Assist for autonomous parking, a surround-view monitor, and front and rear parking sensors.
