Overview

Crossovers and pickup trucks are the hottest-selling automotive segments, and the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz blends the most sought-after features of each. It has finally completed the long trip from concept vehicle (as seen at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit) to release. Yes, this compact utility vehicle with a versatile cargo bed is now on the sales floor. Hyundai refers to it as a Sport Adventure Vehicle, but you can call it what you like. It’s rugged, practical, and smooth-riding, thanks to its unibody construction. It was designed in California with lots of consumer input: Hyundai’s R&D people surveyed outdoor enthusiasts to find out where they’d drive such a vehicle and what they’d want from it in terms of cargo space, capabilities, and the like. That said, it’s appropriate that it bears the name of Northern California’s most memorable surfing town.

Like all Hyundais, the Santa Cruz is loaded with advanced technology and other must-have features. It’s also covered by exceptional warranties – including 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage and comes with 3 years/36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance (oil/filter changes and tire rotations).

Trims and Powertrains

The Santa Cruz is made in SE, SEL, SEL Premium, and Limited trim levels. The SE and SEL come with a 191 hp and 181 lb.-ft. of torque 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Those who want more oomph can opt for the SEL Premium and Limited, which get a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder (281 hp and 311 lb.-ft. of torque) married to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters. All-wheel drive is standard with that setup, but the base powertrain can pair with either front-wheel drive or available AWD. A Santa Cruz with the base engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which rises to a 5,000-pound max with the higher-output engine. Maximum payload clocks in at 1,753 lb. in the 4.3-foot-long truck bed.

SE

The base trim of this fun and versatile vehicle emphasizes utility with trailer pre-wiring and a small but well-outfitted cargo bed, which has underbed and sidewall storage compartments and heavy-duty cargo D-rings. The multifunctional tailgate can be controlled remotely. The SE’s other useful features include remote keyless entry, two USB ports, a 12V power outlet, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming. It’s also set up with the SmartSense safety technology suite (forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, driver attention warning, and rear occupant alert).

SEL

The SEL ramps up the features with heated exterior mirrors, proximity entry, remote start, push-button ignition, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and heated front seats. The optional Activity Package will add rooftop rails, an integrated tonneau cover, a 115V power inverter, heavy-duty LED lights, and adjustable tie-down cleats for increased utility; this package also includes a sunroof, sliding and defogging rear glass, LED interior lights, a wireless phone charger, and a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster. The SmartSense suite is bolstered with blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, and safe exit warning. As for the infotainment setup, SiriusXM satellite radio is added.

SEL Premium

The contents of the SEL’s Activity Package all come standard on the SEL Premium, as do LED headlights, Digital Key (lets you start the Santa Cruz using your smartphone), dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink.

Limited

The Limited is loaded with all of the comforts and conveniences: leather seats (ventilated in the front row), a heated steering wheel, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and two second-row USB ports. Its version of SmartSense includes all of the available technologies, adding a surround-view camera system, a blind-spot view monitor, and adaptive cruise control. It also gets a premium Bose sound system and a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, which necessitates a change from wireless smartphone integration to the traditional plug-in version.
