The one-of-a-kind 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is here, and it’s leading the charge (pun intended) within the electric vehicle (EV) segment. This zero-emissions crossover marks the beginning of Hyundai’s new EV initiative, and while you might already be aware of the regular Ioniq (which is offered as a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, or an EV), the Ioniq 5 is wholly unique in the automaker’s lineup. It shows off an unmistakable exterior characterized by sharp angles, distinct pixelated light clusters, and ultra-modern flush door handles, all of which contribute to its admirable aerodynamics. Inside, the ’22 Ioniq 5 is remarkably spacious and – despite its minimalist aesthetic – packed with a ton of premium content. Some highlights on the list of available features are an augmented reality head-up display, a crisp digital gauge cluster, and wireless device charging.

Trim Levels and Powertrain

Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 is a two-row crossover that’s available in four trims: SE Standard Range, SE, SEL, and Limited. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is optional for all trims except the SE Standard Range. That trim comes with a single 125 kW electric motor that produces 168 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. The remaining RWD grades get a 168 kW electric motor that stirs 225 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. AWD Ioniqs get two motors: a 74 kW unit and a 165 kW unit, which combine to make 320 hp and 446 lb.-ft. of torque. The driving range for the SE Standard Range is 220 miles, but this increases to 303 miles with the other RWD trims; the range for AWD models is 256 miles.

Electric Range and Charging

The ’22 Ioniq 5 gets an 800-volt rapid charger that can go from 10 percent to 80 percent charge in approximately 18 minutes. What’s more, Ioniq 5 owners can take advantage of two years of unlimited 30-minute complimentary charging sessions through Electrify America’s network of DC fast-charging stations. The Ioniq 5’s battery can add some charge on the go, too, thanks to regenerative braking. This feature can be manipulated via the steering wheel paddle shifters: the plus (+) shifter sets regenerative braking higher so the battery can acquire more energy, while the minus (-) shifter sets it lower to allow for smoother coasting when your foot is off the accelerator. If you don’t want to think about it, the convenient Smart mode will handle regenerative braking for you.

Prominent Amenities

Both SE trims receive automatic LED headlights, heated side mirrors, rear privacy glass, proximity entry with push-button ignition, stain-resistant cloth seats with front-row heating and driver power adjustments, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with brake regen paddle shifters, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with an EV technology display, five USB ports (one for data and the others for charging), and 60/40-split rear seats with a folding center armrest. The SEL gets premium LED front accent lighting, projector-type LED headlights, power-folding side mirrors, a hands-free liftgate, H-Tex synthetic-leather seats, a wireless phone charger, a heated steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, 64-color ambient interior lighting, and second-row HVAC vents.

The range-topping Limited takes passenger comfort to new levels with ventilated front seats, position memory and extra leg support for the driver, a power-adjustable front passenger’s seat, rear side-window sunshades, and a sliding center console. It also gains rain-sensing wipers, Digital Key, Remote Smart Parking Assist, premium side sills, gloss-black exterior accents, a single panel “Vision” glass roof, an augmented reality (AR) head-up display, and a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) 120-volt power outlet that allows you to charge equipment inside and outside the vehicle.

Active Safety Aids

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 comes with a series of game-changing safety features. Both SE trims have forward collision-avoidance assist with obstacle detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, speed limit assist, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, rear parking sensors, driver attention warning, and safe exit warning. The SEL adds front parking sensors and an enhanced forward collision system with enhanced obstacle detection and evasive steering assist. The Limited adds a surround-view camera system, a blind-spot view monitor (displays a live feed of the vehicle’s blind-spots in the gauge cluster), and reverse parking collision-avoidance assist.

Multimedia Features

The SE Standard Range, SE, and SEL get the well-equipped base infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen that supports navigation, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dynamic voice recognition (which can respond to certain functional commands for popping the trunk, opening and closing the windows, and heating the seats), and SiriusXM satellite radio. The high-end Limited is made complete with an upscale Bose audio system.
