2019 Hyundai Tucson

The 2019 Hyundai Tucson has been refreshed for this model year with more standard safety technology, a revised lineup of engines, a new fascia with updated headlights, a redesigned center stack, available LED headlights and taillights, and other improvements. There's ample room for passengers and their stuff, with 31 cubic feet of cargo space when the back row is occupied. When you fold that 60/40 split row down, that capacity jumps to 61.9 cubic feet.

There are two four-cylinder engine choices: a 161 hp 2.0-liter (found in the two lowest trims) and a 181 hp 2.4-liter (found in the top three trims); each is mated to the same six-speed automatic transmission with tap-shifting mode. EPA ratings for fuel economy on the various trims range from 21 city/26 highway/23 combined to 24 city/28 highway/25 combined. A start/stop system comes standard to save fuel while the Tucson is waiting at red lights.

Trim Levels and Standard Equipment

There are six trims to choose from: the SE, Value, SEL, Sport, Limited, and Ultimate. Standard features include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability, a touchscreen entertainment/communication system, Bluetooth with steering wheel-mounted controls, remote keyless entry, and extensive active safety technology.

Despite its affordability, don't mistake the '19 Tucson for a bare-bones vehicle; it offers some impressive available amenities, from heated rear seats to driver attention assist for detecting driver drowsiness. The Value trim, for example, receives heated front seats, a blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic warning, and an eight-way power driver's seat with power lumbar support. The plush Limited trim gets aesthetic upgrades in the form of exterior chrome accents, and interior improvements from leather seating to Qi wireless charging, while the cream-of-the-crop Ultimate trim receives ventilated front seats, heated back row seats, "smart" cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, and a 4.2-inch color LCD vehicle information display.

Technology and Safety Features

The long list of standard active safety equipment on the new Tucson includes a backup camera with dynamic guidelines, a perimeter monitor, pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, forward collision avoidance assist, driver attention warning, and a rearview monitor. Rear cross-traffic collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and a surround view monitor are available on higher trims.

The entertainment/audio system with 7-inch touchscreen is standard, as are Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. On higher trims this system gets upgraded to an 8-inch touchscreen. Every Tucson comes with three years of Hyundai Blue Link service to enable remote start, climate control, remote locking, emergency assistance, and locator service should the vehicle be stolen. Additional available amenities include Qi wireless device charging, rear-seat USB port, adaptive cruise control, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
