2019 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid & Electric

2019 Hyundai Ioniq

Overview

The Hyundai Ioniq has deservedly gotten a lot of attention for the advantages it offers to eco-conscious drivers who are looking for it all: great fuel economy, excellent safety and technology features, and unmatched warranty coverage (10 years/100,000 miles powertrain). This good-looking hatchback also offers buyers a trifecta of choices: it's available in electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions. For this model year, it returns with improved active safety features and, for the electric and plug-in hybrid, a charge management system that can be managed remotely through the proprietary Blue Link app/system.

The Ioniq trio ranks among the most affordable alternative-fuel vehicles on the market today, especially the hybrid model, with its starting MSRP of $22,400. The list of standard and available equipment is also impressive, even more so now that it's been beefed up in the active safety technology category.

Ioniq Hybrid

The Ioniq Blue hybrid leads its class (and all cars, actually) with an EPA rating of up to 59 miles per gallon in highway driving. Its around-town fuel economy is right up there, too, at 57 mpg. The 139 horsepower gas-electric powerplant is mated to a six-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission with SHIFTRONIC for drive mode selection. Most competing hybrids use a continuously variable transmission instead, but the EcoShift in the Ioniq provides smoother shifting without the somewhat notorious CVT lag.

There are three trim levels for the hybrid version of the '19 Ioniq: Blue, SEL, and Limited. The base trim comes with dual automatic climate control with auto defog, cloth seating, tilt wheel, push-button start, Bluetooth capability, USB ports, and an infotainment system with 7-inch touchscreen and SiriusXM satellite radio. The SEL adds heated front seats, paddle shifters, heated side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, and LED taillights and daytime running lights. The Limited maxes out the amenities with leather seating, a power tilt/slide moonroof, LED interior illumination, and three complimentary years of Hyundai's BlueLink service, which enables remote start and locking/unlocking as well as on-demand diagnostics, plus parental notifications when teen drivers are behind the wheel.

Ioniq Electric

The Ioniq Electric tops the list of most efficient electric vehicles, as it's EPA rated to deliver 136 MPGe. It will only be sold in California at first, but its availability is sure to expand. The Ioniq Electric comes in two trim levels: the base and the Limited, which have generally the same difference in standard features as the base and Limited trims outlined above for the Hybrid.

Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid

With a driving range of more than 600 miles (including a 29-mile all-electric range) thanks to its combination of gas and electric power, the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid fits the bill for those who want the best of both worlds. Its two trim levels are the base and the Limited; as with the other Ioniq models, the lists of standard features for each of these trims are comparable.

Safety Features

The base trims of the Ioniq's three powertrain versions have good safety equipment, including a rearview camera, but the list quickly grows as the trim level rises. The SEL (middle trim) of the Ioniq Hybrid adds automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, driver attention warning, and a blind-spot monitor. The top-tier Limited gets automatic high beams and is the only trim that's eligible for rear parking sensors and dynamic bending light technology.

The breakdown is similar with the Electric and Plug-in Hybrid models' respective two trims, with the base including a backup camera and the Limited receiving the premium active safety features.
